“There are no contests in aikido. A true warrior is invincible because he or she contests with nothing.
Defeat means to defeat the mind of contention that we harbor within.”

~ O'Sensei, Founder of Aikido

Aikido represents the culmination of founder Morhei Ueshiba’s endless pursuit of martial virtue. The are numerous ways the term “Aikido” can be translated. “Ai” has been translated as meeting, harmony, harmonious fit, unity, love. “Ki” has been translated as force, energy, intention, encounter. “Do” has been translated as a path, way, discipline or natural order. The complexity of the term of Aikido represents the complexity of reasons students may engage in the practice. It also represents the remarkable depth of self cultivation available through this discipline.

As a martial art, aikido is built upon the response to an attack. Each encounter is engaged and channels into a conclusion that may involve an  immoblizing pin or uprooting throws. Under the surface however, there is a rich form of internal cultivation that includes centerdenss, martial timing, expansive awareness, effortless power, non-resistance to force and  the willful direction of empowered intent.
